Even though it is not clear when Christ will return, believers must be ready when He does. One way that they do this is by shining bright in the midst of darkness (Daniel 12:3). God does not promise believers will be exempt from difficulty, but He does promise deliverance from it in the end. Those who are written in the Book of Life will have an end to their suffering.
