"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds..."
God uses trials (difficulties, discouragement, persecution, and suffering) as a tool to grow His people spiritually. Knowing this gives believers joy through the trial. Without this perspective, believers will struggle to endure, But with this understanding, believers will flourish, even through hardship.
